The Creative Writing Club Luxembourg - A Bit of History

Where did it all begin?

The Creative Writing Club of Luxembourg (CWC) has a rather nebulous beginning (like most things in life). Much like the missing links of evolution, it is hard to pin point exactly when it started or at what point it stopped being a casual meeting place over here and morphed into an organized club over there.

There are a core of members who have lived in Luxembourg for well over ten years, and there is a network of members who have left Luxembourg but are still very much in our thoughts, our e-mails, and out literary lives.

Some magnetic force – the desire to write-drew us together. Was the point of our creation at Dana Rufolo’s excellent creative writing classes at Luxembourg Accueil www.luxembourgaccueil.com. Before that there were several casual writing groups who in time gravitated toward each other. Or did the CWC really come into formal existence when we were housed for a few years in the European Foyer Building in Luxembourg? It certainly became most organised and blossomed into a real organism under Kim Berquist’s Presidency many moons ago.

Suffice to say we have been around for a while and we have every intention of staying. But many of us have since been published, or have different reasons for belonging to the group then we once did. So we don’t mind if we evolve more. And that’s where new members coming in with their good ideas and fresh energy can help.

To offer a sampling of what we do, although anything is possible, here is a quick summary of some of the highlight events we have organised or participated in:

  • “Melting Pol” Writing Seminar at Mersch Literary Centre
  • Journal Writing Weekend
  • Weekend writing retreat at D’Orval Abbaye in Belgium
  • Geneva Writers’ Annual Convention in Switzerland
  • Mosaic Writing Workshop with invited guest, Susan M. Tiberghien, author of "Looking for Gold, A Year in Jungian Analysis", 1997, and "Circling to the Center, One Woman's Encounter with Silent Prayer", 2001
